Crane's Colossal Carnival experiences a major downsizing when the carnival's possessions are taken back, after the rubes rebelled, leading to a desperate need for funds for ace pitchman "Honest" Bill Hogan (Robert Armstrong), owner Jeffrey Crane (Edmund Gwenn) and Crane's daughter Betty (Betty Furness). When Bill goes to the local bank, he meets Elmer Lamb (Stuart Erwin), a country bumpkin with an extraordinary brain capable of incredible calculations, working as a human adding machine to save up for his dream dairy farm. Bill quickly nicknames Elmer "Chain Lightning" and recruits him for the carnival.
Unfortunately, Bill's plans don't work out as planned, but everything changes when Elmer and low-grade gangster Pudgy Murphy (Edward Brophy) defeat renowned bridge champion J. Montgomery Brantley (E.E. Clive) in a bridge game on a train. However, Pudgy has his own agenda, and it looks like Chain Lightning's luck might be running out.
